  7. This readme file contains important information about this
  8. PowerAlbum release.  It includes a list of new features,
  9. restrictions, and solutions to problems you may encounter.

  27. 1. Installation
  28. ---------------

  30. Super Art Pack Sound Files
  31.  
  32.   Standard Installation copies the SOUNDS.ALB (catalog of all sounds)
  33.   to the \WINDOWS\POWERALB\ALBUMS directory (default directory).  This
  34.   file is updated with the CD-ROM drive letter specific to your system.
  35.   If your CD-ROM drive letter is not D:, use this file instead of the
  36.   SOUNDS.ALB file on the CD-ROM.

  38.   All sound files are located on the Super Art Pack DISC 3.  Ensure you
  39.   have DISC 3 inserted in your CD-ROM drive before attempting to play
  40.   sounds.  Should you play sounds without DISC 3 in place, you will
  41.   receive an error message.  To correct this error, acknowledge the error
  42.   message, insert the correct CD (DISC 3) into your CD-ROM drive, and then
  43.   play the sound you wish to hear.

  46. Super Art Pack Photos
  47.  
  48.   PHOTOS.ALB and PHOTOS16.ALB are catalogs of the same photographs; however,
  49.   the thumbnails in PHOTOS.ALB are 16 million colors while PHOTOS16.ALB
  50.   only uses 16 colors.  Due to the increase in album size associated with
  51.   higher color palettes, we recommended that you load PHOTOS16.ALB if your
  52.   system has only 8 megabytes of RAM or lower to prevent your system from
  53.   operating too slowly.

  56. Using The PHOTO Album Files
  57.  
  58.   To use PHOTOS.ALB or PHOTOS16.ALB we recommend you load the album file from
  59.   the Super Art Pack DISC 2.  If one attempts to use either one of the PHOTO
  60.   albums from DISC 1 an error message will appear asking for the DISC 2
  61.   to be inserted into drive D:.  Inserting DISC 2 will remove the error
  62.   message; however, another error message may appear if one attempts to
  63.   select a different category from the same album file.  This problem
  64.   does not appear on all systems, and can be avoided by using the album
  65.   files from DISC 2.

  68. Error Message Asking For Drive D:
  69.  
  70.   PowerAlbum DISC error messages are not drive letter sensitive.  That is
  71.   PowerAlbum asks you to insert discs in drive D: regardless of what
  72.   drive letter is actually assigned to your CD-ROM drive.  Insert your
  73.   discs into your CD-ROM drive, select OK to remove the error message and
  74.   run the program normally.

  77. Adding Video Files

  79.   If you plan on adding Video files to your albums, you must first
  80.   run Setup on the enclosed CD-ROM.  This will install the Microsoft
  81.   Video for Windows drivers onto your system so that it may be used by
  82.   PowerAlbum.

  86. 2. New and Improved Features
  87. ----------------------------
  88.   This release contains a substantial amount of new functionality.
  89.  
  90.     a.  NOTEBOOK STYLES.
  91.         There are 3 notebook styles form which to choose from. See
  92.         the "Options|Styles" menu item for a selection.
  93.  
  94.     b.  MULTIMEDIA SUPPORT.
  95.         You can now add Sound (WAV) and Video (AVI) files to your
  96.         albums.  If you plan on adding and/or playing video files,
  97.         you must first install the Microsoft Video Drivers by
  98.         running Setup on the enclosed CD-ROM.  You must have a
  99.         sound card properly installed on your system in order to
  100.         play sound files.

  102.     c.  PLAY SOUNDS AND DISPLAY PICTURES SIMULTANEOUSLY.
  103.         Select the "Picture|Assign sounds to pictures" or
  104.         "Picture|Assign pictures to sounds" menu items to
  105.         associate pictures and sounds.

  107.     d.  REMOVABLE MEDIA SUPPORT.
  108.         When adding pictures from removable media (e.g. CD-ROMs,
  109.         floppy disks, etc.), you can tell PowerAlbum the name of
  110.         the disk and it will prompt you for that disk later.

  112.     e.  AUTOMATIC ALBUM SCANNING.
  113.         Have PowerAlbum flip through it's pages and display the
  114.         entire album contents for you without touching a single
  115.         key.  You can select the types of albums items to display
  116.         (i.e. pictures, videos) and for the number of seconds.

  118.     f.  EXPORT PICTURES TO NEW FORMATS.
  119.         You can now convert your pictures to other file formats.
  120.         See the Picture Export Restrictions section for a list of
  121.         restrictions.

  123.     g.  IMPROVED THUMBNAILS.
  124.         Select Options|Preferences to change the number of colors
  125.         used.  PowerAlbum will support video cards which can 
  126.         display 16, 256, 65536, and 16 million colors.  If you
  127.         have existing albums, you must rebuild the thumbnails in
  128.         order to get the improved thumbnails.

  130.     h.  CREATE CATEGORIES AUTOMATICALLY.
  131.         You can now have PowerAlbum scan your hard disk and create
  132.         category names for you.  The category names can be based
  133.         on the type of file or the path it originated from.

  135.     i.  COPY PATHS TO CLIPBOARD.
  136.         You can now copy a picture or sound file path (or the
  137.         picture) to the clipboard as text for pasting into another
  138.         application's edit control.

  142. 3. Information for Calendar Creator Users
  143. -----------------------------------------
  144.   PowerAlbum is fully compatible with versions 2.10 and above of
  145.   Calendar Creator for Windows.  However, in order to access many
  146.   of the new features.  You must run PowerAlbum as a standalone
  147.   product.  This is because the menu bar is not available while
  148.   being run from within Calendar Creator.
  149.  
  150.   For example, if you wish to use a new notebook style, load your
  151.   album from the standalone version of PowerAlbum, change the
  152.   style and then save the album.  The next time you access it
  153.   from Calendar Creator, your album will be displayed in the new 
  154.   notebook style.

  157.   PowerAlbum 2.1 can also work with albums from Calendar Creator
  158.   for Windows, version 1.00.  However, to use these albums, it
  159.   is necessary to open a New album in PowerAlbum 2.1 and Merge
  160.   the old album into the new one.

  163. 4.  Picture Export Restrictions.
  164. ------------------------------------------
  165.   The following limitations apply to Exporting Pictures in
  166.   PowerAlbum:
  167.  
  168.     1)  No vector image can be exported to a JPG.
  169.     2)  No JPG can be exported to a vector.           
  170.     3)  No PCD can be exported to another raster format.

  172.   We anticipate that these restrictions will not exist in a
  173.   future release.

  177. 5.  Video Import and Playing Problems.
  178. ------------------------------------------------
  179.   If you cannot add or play video files try the following:
  180.  
  181.   a) Make sure you have installed the Video For Windows Runtime
  182.      drivers as described in the Installation section above.
  183.  
  184.   b) If you are recieving error message #675, select File|Run
  185.      from the Program Manager and enter "REGEDIT".  Once REGEDIT
  186.      is running, select File|Merge Registration File... menu item
  187.      and select the VFW.REG file in your program directory.

  189.      Exit Windows, and try again.
